From Iraq to Qatar: The Artistic Journey of Ahmed Allawi

For Ahmed Allawi, the journey from Iraq to Qatar is not merely a geographical fact. It is the central narrative of his artistic life.

Formation in Iraq

Allawi received his formal artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad — one of the Arab world's most distinguished institutions for the visual arts. His specialisation was ceramics, a discipline that gave him a deep understanding of material, process, and the relationship between form and surface.

Iraq in the late twentieth century was a country of extraordinary artistic vitality, even amid political turbulence. Baghdad's art scene was rich, contested, and deeply serious — an environment that shaped Allawi's commitment to craft and his understanding of art as a form of cultural expression with real stakes.

Arrival in Qatar

Allawi arrived in Doha in 1999, joining a growing community of Arab artists who found in Qatar a context of support, patronage, and cultural ambition. Over the following decades, he became one of the most recognised fine artists in the country — exhibiting at Katara Cultural Village, participating in international art forums, and undertaking major public art commissions across Qatar.

Two Cultures, One Vision

The tension and synthesis between his Iraqi formation and his Qatari context is visible throughout Allawi's work. The ancient Mesopotamian heritage of Iraq — its bronzes, its reliefs, its ceramic traditions — meets the Arabian visual culture of the Gulf: the horse, the calligraphy, the geometry of Islamic art.

The result is a body of work that is neither purely Iraqi nor purely Qatari, but something more interesting: a contemporary Arabic art that draws on the full depth of the civilisation it belongs to.
