Cave of Hira — First Prize, Makkah Beautification Competition 2010
Cave of Hira
First Prize — First Islamic International Competition for the Beautification of Makkah Al-Mukarramah
2010
Some commissions shape a career.
Then there are creations whose spiritual significance elevates them beyond the reach of ordinary artistic aspirations.
In 2010, Ahmed Allawi received the First Prize in the First Islamic International Competition for the Beautification of Makkah Al-Mukarramah. This competition was conducted under the auspices of His Royal Highness the Emir of the Makkah Region and in partnership with the Municipality of the Holy Capital. His winning design, Cave of Hira (F3 – G9), was acknowledged as the Best Design for site number 9.
To grasp the importance of this accolade, one must appreciate the site itself.
Jabal al-Nour — the Mountain of Light — towers over Makkah. At its peak lies the Cave of Hira: the narrow, tranquil space where, in 610 CE, the Angel Jibreel appeared to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and conveyed the first verses of the Qur’an.
Iqra. Read.
From that singular moment in a cave atop a mountain, a civilization emerged — a civilization of knowledge, beauty, and artistic and scientific accomplishments that would endure for fourteen centuries. The competition invited artists to engage with this sacred geography through designs of the utmost artistic and spiritual significance.
Allawi’s interpretation was not a direct depiction of the cave, but rather a monumental artistic expression. The design rises in the silhouette of the mountain itself. Within that form, Arabic calligraphy, Islamic geometric patterns, and a central medallion featuring the name of the Prophet ﷺ intertwine. The composition conveys themes of revelation, chosen solitude, and the quiet strength of place. It aspires to transform architecture into a spiritual landscape — a space where light, script, and form converge.
This was not simply a design task. It was an endeavor to visually articulate one of the most profound moments in human and spiritual history: the instant when the Word entered the world through a narrow opening in a mountain.
The award remains a pivotal moment in Ahmed Allawi’s career. It situates his work within a longer lineage of artists who recognized that beauty in the service of the sacred is not mere decoration — it is devotion.
As an Iraqi contemporary artist residing in Doha since 1999, Allawi has continued to delve into themes of movement, calligraphy, and architectural scale across bronze sculpture, ceramics, and large-scale public works throughout Qatar and the Gulf. The Cave of Hira design stands as a quiet yet powerful chapter in that ongoing journey.
